the Whack List

I didn’t want to call this the Black List because I don’t like the association of certain colours with certain emotions, negative or positive (e.g. red = angry, blue = sad, white = innocent, black = evil, etc.), and the further implications of those colours insofar as we associate them with human beings (e.g. Asians are “Yellow”, African Americans are “Black”, Europeans are “White” etc.)– indeed, the very idea that things have colour, when we are limited to such a tiny percentage of the radio spectrum. Subjectivity! :D

This Whack List are all places on the Web that are ingrained in hegemony: ethnocentricism, Capitalism, developed-developing binary, sexism, classism, rape culture, heterocentrism and homophobia, gender binary, and so on. They are sites which commidify, typify, condone, and/or promote any of these hegemonic ideologies, or which trivialize their impact.

I encourage you to explore these sites, to think critically and/or constructively about them, and especially to challenge them if you feel strongly about them: critique them in a blog post, contact their administrators, discuss them with a friend, et cetera. Also feel free to contact me if you disagree with my pronouncement of a site as “whack” (i.e. misguided, narrow-minded, or generally fucked up). Finally, if you have any suggestions for additions to this list, I’d be happy to hear them.

Racist, misogynist, eurocentric– the best of all possible worlds.

“Back then people didn’t get all crazy about one or two teeny little rapes. Just saying…” (direct quote)

For some reason, open confessions of rape are totally normal if you can post as “Anonymous”.

Uses the term “thinking” loosely…
